A Word of Greeting by the Rector of the University

„As the schools are the gardens of the church (seminarium ecclesiae)… the languages, Latin and Greek grammar (as well as Hebrew, if possible), dialectics, rhetorics, and the free arts should be taught that are necessary for theological studies. Then theology and the Scriptures are also to be presented to the students…”

The Debrecen Synod set up these high standards for the already well-respected training of ministers in Debrecen, as early as in 1567. The city of Debrecen and the College itself guaranteed the high academic quality of the training.

Why theology and why in Debrecen?

The text quoted above demonstrates eloquently that theological education in Debrecen does not only have a long tradition, but it has gained national and international reputation because of its endeavour to protect its confessional identity and to meet the ecclesial and social challenges of the times, simultaneously.

It is such an exciting venture to do and to study theology today as well! On the one hand, it means getting insight into the rich past of the history of the church, into the colourful world of the history of religions, into the heritage of the theoretical and practical interpretations of the Scriptures, and into the special fields of theology. But it also means an intention to give well established answers to the question: how should the faith take shape in our modern world? Our university serves the training of ministers, of teachers of religion and of other church staff, by offering a wide range of academic programs, and by providing a high quality of teaching and research.

The conditions offered by our programs and by our campus guarantee that our graduates will serve the church as faithful experts with a wide intellectual horizon. Such advantages are the easy accessibility of the facilities of the University of Debrecen, the joint and parallel study programs, the extensive international academic network offering opportunities for studies abroad, the ECTS credit system that guarantees compatibility with programs of other universities, our Theological Library, and our modern computer network, the boarding facilities, active students’ life in the College and the richness of the cultural life of the city.

Our postgraduate programs and our Doctor of Philosophy program offer special academic competences in order to train young scholars for the church. By these, our university wishes to make a substantial contribution to the enrichment of the Hungarian academic life and of the universal and national cultural values.

The Debrecen Reformed College and its Theological University is the centre of the spiritual and intellectual life of our region and it is an integral part of the Hungarian academic life. As such, we invite and welcome our students and all those who wish to study with us with a commitment to search the depths of God’s mysteries together by common learning and teaching and as being devoted to be faithful servants of our church and of our people, to be the torch-bearers of the freedom of scholarship, committed to contribute to the enrichment of the universal human values.

The Rt.Rev. Prof. Sándor Fazakas, Ph.D. habil.
The Rector of the Debrecen Reformed Theological University
